If the number of luxury shoe brands that started out catering to women only but are taking care of men also is any indication, then men are just as obsessed with shoes as women. I’m typing and really picking my brain at the same time to name at least three established brands that haven’t hopped on this lucrative bandwagon. In all honesty, only Manolo Blahnik is springing to my mind. Today is not about name calling, so let’s just get straight to the point, which is whether you’re familiar with Nicholas Kirkwood or not, it doesn’t really matter because you will be in no time because #1: he’s one of the A-list shoe designers of his generation (you can mark my words for that) and #2: the luxury conglomerate LVMH has placed their faith in him and promised to do everything in their power to help him become the next Christian Louboutin. Next-level exciting, isn’t it? When he announced late last year that he’d unveil an entirely new line for men, I was both excited and anxious because even though he has attained some roaring success and beautified the feet of many world-famous women since he launched his eponymous brand back in 2005, there was really no guarantee that his venture into the men’s shoes segment would click, you know. Why am I saying that? Because we have Jimmy Choo as a cautionary tale. As his full collection has been rolled out by now, the final verdict is finally in: Mr. Kirkwood has absolutely over-delivered. This pair of low-top derbys is the living proof. Its color of bright blue and metallic teal truly is daring and gorgeous. It would be hard-pressed to find a similar color even in apparel or accessories so the fact that we’re having it on a pair of shoes for men makes it all the more special. Secondly, the attention to details and architectural element that Mr. Kirkwood is known for are evident in the black lace up closure, tonal piping, contrast patent leather and white stripe at welt. The shoes are priced at a not exactly affordable $830; however judging by the fact that popular sizes are all gone, the tag doesn’t seem that big of a deal. Nicholas Kirkwood Bright Blue Metallic Leather Derbys is available on SSENSE.
