I’m usually not very smitten with celebrities’ style because they have all the money in the world to buy whatever they want and a whole glam squad to get them all dolled up and picture-perfect whenever they step out. This fact manifests itself very clearly in celebrities whose on-carpet and off-carpet pictures are in so stark contrast. I’m a staunch advocate of the mantra that if you managed to look that impeccable on the red carpet, you would certainly manage to look at least not like a hot mess running errands around town most of the times. This is why my daily dose of inspiration often comes from blogs such as The Satorialist and Jak & Jil etc, which feature normal people with interesting personal style.
However, that doesn’t mean there is absolutely no celebrity whom could teach us a thing or two about how to actually wear clothes. So, this idea of having a mini series of celebrities whose style truly inspires me came up. I’m not sure how often I would be able to do this, since there aren’t that many candidates yet. But the ones that I have in mind have consistently showcased some serious amazing personal style. The first one that springs to my mind is the one and only David Beckham. Let’s decode his style and see why he’s arguably the biggest source of inspiration for every man out there.
Beckham’s style is the epitome of effortless coolness, masculinity and timelessness. Be it on the red carpet, at the airport or just simply running errands, he never fails to look exceptionally dashing without giving away the impression that he spends hours in front of the mirror. What is his secret for pulling off the casual looks? Nice jeans, killer jackets, eye-popping scarves and a bag:
During summertime, you can take the jackets out of the equation, and thus what left are just a shirt and a pair of trousers. This look is complicatedly simple. If I could shift the blame on anyone for my obsession with plaid shirts, it would be none other than Mr. Beckham. I still remember those college days when, instead of poring over textbooks for exams, I literally had my eyes glued to the plaid shirts section on the website of Abercrombie & Fitch. Crazy old times.
And if I could legally raid (does that pairing of words even make sense?) his closet, I would leave no overcoat unturned because as his style has proved, a killer overcoat is capable of dramatically transforming you into the most dashing man ever walking the earth. He really has his outwear game down to a science–the fit, the length, the colors and the layering are all solid work.
Of course, we can’t discount the fact that most of what he wears come from the top-end brands of the market, so they are naturally tailored to perfection and of the highest quality. However, the crux of the matter here is it doesn’t matter that much what brand you buy. What is of utmost importance is how fitted the shoulders, the torso part, and the length of the coat are to your body. I feel like this issue has been beaten to death, but still the vast majority of men get it so wrong. Why? I have no clue.
When it comes to evening wear, you don’t necessarily have to wear a matchy-matchy suit to be well-dressed. In fact, wearing two separate pieces makes you look much more fashionable and…interesting. I don’t know whether his super fashionable wife Victoria assists him in dressing up for the occasions or not, but he’s always managed to nail the color combination hard.
Here are some of my all-time favorite looks of Mr. Beckham. I’m not kidding you, but sometimes I have to look twice to make sure that it is not a model walking straight out of a fashion show. And how many people do you know who can still look so stylish even when hobbling along on crutches?
